Echo Quilting

I've been reading a lot lately about the technique called Echo Quilting as a design element and how it can be used to create really dramatic results.

So what exactly is echo quilting and how should it be used?  It's actually a form of background quilting that can be done either by hand or machine.  I think we all at one time or another have had the experience of carefully choosing and placing our quilt designs and then taking the time to work out elaborate motifs only to discover they've blended in with the quilt fabric and have practically disappeared.  Perhaps a bit of echo quilting around the design would have made all the difference and the motif would have really popped.  It's fast to do because it requires no marking, it adds emphasis to applique and quilting designs with ease and is a much quicker alternative to micro-stippling or other fill stitches.  We most often see echo quilting in Hawaiian applique but it can be seen in other types of quilting as well.

Keep this technique in mind when planning your next quilting project.  I'm sure you'll find lots of clever ways to make your project even more beautiful.
