Churn-Dash Blocks!

I've been participating in a Block of the Month project through one of our local quilt shops since April of last year.  The idea is pretty simple, you sign up to participate for the length of the project (for this one, it was a year) and then every month you receive a packet containing materials to make the block.  For this particular BOM we make 3 nine inch blocks each month .

I've stepped out of my comfort zone with this BOM and have chosen to use very brightly colored fabric in the Churn-Dash pattern for my block sets.  And now with 10 months of Churn Dashes behind me, it's time to start thinking about what I'm going to do with  36 of these lovelies.  So this afternoon I sat down with a pile of them in front of me hoping some sort of inspiration would come.

What size do I want my finished project to be?  Should I use sashing between the blocks and if so, what color should the sashing fabric be?  And how wide of a sashing do I really need?  Should I use corner-stones in the sashing or simple strips that would let the blocks be the focus? And how about the borders...how wide should they be and how many...2...3???  These are just a couple of the dilemmas that come up when the project gets to the point of assembling all the parts in a cohesive and interesting design.  So I went looking online to see if I could find some inspirational photos of churn dashes.   There are literally hundreds of them!

There are fancy ones.  So Pretty!  But way too fancy for what I have in mind.  Although I do love the borders and how the choice of that particular blue in the border really makes the blues in the blocks pop out at you.

And there are simple ones.  So sweet and yet so useful!  No sashing, no borders just beautiful churn dashes.

I even found Giant Churn Dashes on all shades of blues!

And tiny churn dashes that would fit in the palm of your hand.

How about these churn dashes set on point.  They are so beautiful too.  And I love the rich browns and rusts and golds.

Or this quilt with churn dashes and secondary patterns of white blocks.

Well I certainly do have a lot of wonderful examples to inspire me now.  Stay tuned to see my finished Churn Dash quilt.  I have 2 more months and 6 more blocks to complete and then I'll get them put together in a quilt I hope is as beautiful as these.

  1. As a man who works with wood making precise cuts and angles, I can really appreciate how difficult it is to put together a quilt with precise cuts and angles, looks like it would be a lot harder to do with cloth which is floppy than with wood.

I have to say that getting under one of these warm luxurious beauties with my baby and a hot cup of coffee on a blustery day is .... hmmm ... well you can imagine the fire and so on!
