A Gift For A Classmate

Every year the ladies in my Thursday morning quilting class exchange gifts on the last meeting day before Christmas.  This year has been exciting because our class has gained three new members.  We all got together and decided that this year we would draw names rather than everyone giving gifts to everyone else.

I decided this year my gift would be a handmade one and I've chosen to make a mug rug as my gift.  I chose the fabric and got it cut out tonight.

Choosing the fabric to use is one of my favorite things to do.  I love playing with all the different color combinations and trying to imagine how they will all fit together.  I was fortunate enough to have a scrap bag full of Christmas fabric and chose these fabrics for the mug rug.  Here they are , all cut out and ready to be assembled.

I love making snowball blocks and had a great time putting this one together.  It just seemed right to have penguins frolicking on snow in my snowball block.

I assembled the tree next...

stitched it all together, did a little quilting and Viola!

It's a cute mug rug for one of my classmates.

I found a sweet mug that also features penguins and has a snowman or two on it as well.  A tin full of gingerbread cookies and a pack of hot chocolate mix will finish the gift off nicely.  Now I think I'll go make one of these for myself and maybe one for my hubby as well.  He LOVES hot chocolate on these cold winter mornings.

If you'd like to make one of these for yourself or someone you love, the tutorial and material list can be found at the Crafty Quilter website.
